LOVE IS IN THE chAIR
Zalaba Design is proud to announce that it will premiere the new collection LOVE
during Salone del Mobile at Magna Pars Hotel Via Tortona 15 in Milano, April 17,
2018 – April 22, 2018.
After World War II many Bauhaus members like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and
Marcel Breuer emigrated to the Unites States. They taught at Harvard and the Institute of
Design, which was founded in Chicago by Laszlo Maholy-Nagy and became known as The New
Bauhaus.
Otto Kolb was a part of this design movement. He taught design at the Illinois Institute of
Technology in Chicago during the 1940s. During the 1950s and 60s, Kolb produced a limited
edition of modern furniture. One of his chairs is exhibited in the Louvre in Paris. Otto Kolb’s
furniture has been featured in auctions held by both Sotheby’s and Quittenbaum.
The pieces of the LOVE collection are as light as air and inspired by Otto Kolb’s LOVE
chair prototype produced in 1950, which was sufficiently eye-catching and featured in an
early Playboy Magazine. The success led to a working relationship during the 60s with Walter
Knoll.
The LOVE chairs and tables fit beautifully into retail and hospitality spaces and inevitably
become the focal point of any scene. Pure modern geometric design characterizes the work of
Ginger Zalaba. In her perception good design is a sculptural interpretation of functionality.
Combining minimalism with materialism has resulted in new and original forms. Zalaba’s
pieces are hand crafted in Italy, ranging different leather colors and steel finishings.
